Habit formation is the greatest language learning matter

Over the years Learning, specifically language learning by habit formation, has been considered as an interesting topic to most of researchers in pedagogical and academic fields all over the world. English as a global language, and its different methods of teaching and learning, has always been at the center of attention for those who practice and learn it.

Language learning is a matter of habit formation

The most practical and useful methods of language learning are being introduced through a decent amount of emphasis upon the concept of habit formation. As an example, GTM(grammar translation method), which is known as one of the earliest methods of language learning and teaching is thoroughly formed based on habit formation.

Also, the goal of language learning can be achieved through practice and repetition of different grammatical and non-grammatical structures and concepts. Using this method, students can easily duplicate and learn the language chunk being taught to them.

Learning by repetition

Based on results of a query conducted through sending a questionnaire to 20 English language teachers and 400 students, repetition and practice plays an undeniable role in the development of different English language skills on the students’ mind.

Also, it is considered as one of the best approaches available for teachers to explain English grammar and vocabulary more productively. According to the results of the questionnaire 70 percent of the students, found it easier and more effective to learn different English language patterns through such methods. Also 16 teachers out of 20, believed that one of the best ways of teaching new words or grammatical rules to the students, is by repetition and practice and doing the same process over and over again.

Learning vocabulary by repetition

Moreover, beside other methods of teaching, English language teachers rely a great deal on repetition and practice of different vocabularies when teaching a new word to the students. According to them, by using this method the students find it easier to innate a new English word meaning. It also enables students to actively use the same grammatical and vocabulary pattern in their writing and speaking.

history of repetition method for learning

Long before GTM was introduced as a pedagogical method to the society of language learners, people used to learn new languages through the excruciating path of repeating a language pattern and its respective meaning over and over again. It was considered as the only method known for learning second language.

how habit formation helps the memory faculty of the brain

habit formation

Furthermore, from a biological point of view, habit formation and repetition of different language patterns, helps the memory faculty of the brain to incorporate the concepts effectively. To elaborate this process, an example is provided in the brain.

Imagine if an English language pattern was a layer of paint on the wall of your memory faculty of your brain. Every time you repeat that pattern of information, another layer of paint is added to the previous layer. The bolder this layer of paint gets, the stronger becomes the language pattern in the memory. This is how habit formation and repetition enhances the process of learning in the brain.

Also, the bolder an information pattern forms in the memory faculty of the brain, the easier can it be put into use. In other words, brain recognizes the same pattern pretty much easier and can access it in a brief moment.

In conclusion, we should not ignore the importance of habit formation on facilitating the learning process of English among students. Whether you are self-studying or not, it is suggested to shape a cycle of language learning habit formation in your daily routine. You can also use this method to obtain new chunks of English language information when practicing to pave the way of language learning in your brain.
