English songs and their use in ESL/EFL classrooms

Abstract:

Learning a new Language needs a positive atmosphere, strong motivation as well as multiple exercises. It is difficult for kids as new learners to stick all the English vocabulary, slangs, grammar rules, structural patterns, idioms, and cultural aspects in their minds at once.

One of the effective ways of teaching English is using English songs in the classroom. Music helps you to create a funny and positive atmosphere in the classroom. It also motivates the students to participate in the class activities.

You should use English music as a main teaching tool in the classroom. Here are eight reasons for using English songs in the ESL/EFL classroom:

English Songs are valuable teaching tools for vocabulary and pronunciation

Songs contain a wide variety of different English vocabulary, expressions, slangs, and idioms. They almost present the exact correct pronunciation. They have authentic language in which they address the natives.

Therefore, English songs are the best teaching repertoire especially for auditory learners (the people who learn best by hearing than other learning styles.) in the EFL/ESL classroom.

English Songs expose children to a variety of different English accents

A language learner should get acquainted enough with different accents of the target (English) language. Auditory comprehension of different accents of the target (English) language is an essential Language learning skill.

English songs contain a variety of different accents such as British accent, American accent, Scottish accent, and so on. Furthermore, they are easily obtainable on the internet. You can select an English song and then download it free.

English songs reflect the cultural aspects of the target language

The most essential part of teaching the target (English) language is teaching cultural aspects to kids. Language learners should have a cultural background to learn the language itself better. They also should know the culture of the target (English) language.

Taking no notice of different cultural and social norms can lead to communicative misunderstanding. For example, the phrase “a good day” means a sunny day in a European country while the phrase means a rainy day in American culture.

English songs almost reflect the cultural aspects of the target (English) language. They also reflect important current events. Therefore, the best way to teach full and comprehensive cultural aspects is using music in the classroom.

English songs create a funny and positive atmosphere in the classroom

Kids learn best when they are surrounded by a funny and positive atmosphere. They like to learn things through interesting and motivational activities.

English songs are the best tools for creating such atmospheres for the kids since they have rhythm and make the kids dance. Therefore, a teacher can create an energetic and fresh atmosphere that evokes the kids’ interest in learning the target language and taking part in class activities by using songs in the classroom.

English songs are the best motives for the kids to be more energetic and active

There are usually two groups in most of the classes:

Group A: The active students who are enthusiastic about the matter being taught and take part in class activities, share their ideas, answer questions and listen carefully.

Group B: The silent students who don’t care about the class and don’t take part in class activities, get bored and sleepy frequently, don’t listen carefully and show little enthusiasm for the class.

It is an undeniable fact that positive energy, high enthusiasm, and activeness play an important role in language learning. The more a student be active and energetic in the class, the more he will learn.

As a result, the active students will have a great performance both in the class and examinations while the inactive students will not learn the language fully. They will get either low scores or fail.

To eliminate the gap between the two groups, you need to bring more positive energy and lively activities to the class. You should raise the inactive students’ spirits so that they would take part in activities more.

Music is undoubtedly the best motive for them to be more energetic and active in the classroom. The rhythm of the music brings joy and liveliness.

The rhymes of the songs make students stick the words in their minds. On the whole, music helps the students to have a better function in the class since music stimulates the kids’ actions and emotions to be more involved in the class.

English songs are the best tools to remember

As mentioned above, it is absolutely difficult for kids to stick all the English vocabulary, slangs, grammar rules, structural patterns, idioms, and cultural norms in their minds at once. They do need sufficient time and focus to learn them all.

They should dedicate a large amount of time and energy to memorize all the English rules and vocabulary. Music helps the kids to learn a huge repertoire of English vocabularies, expressions, slangs, idioms, structural patterns, and cultural aspects in a short time.

The rhythm and the rhymes included in the songs help kids to remember the valuable repertoire. The more students make a deep connection with the songs, the more they memorize songs’ words, structural patterns, and so on.

English songs mostly have a conversational language

Learning conversational interaction skills is an essential matter in language acquisition. Learning the conversational language helps you to share your ideas, thoughts, and personal opinions with others more effectively.

English songs can be a good source of teaching conversational skills to the kids since songs conversationally address the audience.

English songs create a friendly atmosphere in the classroom

Shy students can’t make friends easily or ask the teacher their questions. It is hard for shy students to participate in class activities or mimic particular sounds of the target language.

Music can solve all of these problems. It makes the shy kids more sociable and active in the classroom. Music builds a friendly atmosphere in the classroom.

English songs prompt the students to dance with each other or sing the songs in groups. English songs also allow the teachers to befriend the students. As a result, the teacher can communicate with his students more effectively.

Overall, songs are one of the most powerful training tools. They have a strong positive effect on kids’ language comprehension. A teacher should use music as the main part of the teaching repertoire.

Songs are the best sources of Language cultural aspects and structural patterns. The more the teacher uses music in the classroom, the more fruitful output he gets.
