Teaching English lessons to 1st graders can be a difficult process, particularly when there’s a class of monolingual students and the teacher knows nothing of their language, or it’s a multilingual class and the common language is English. However, not only is it possible to teach beginner students using only English, but it can be one of the best experiences a teacher can have while teaching.
These methods work very well with 1st graders, as the child doesn’t need to know too many words to participate, but once a teacher has applied these methods to their teaching, they may find themselves using them repeatedly, even with their advanced level students. Art Projects in English lessons
Art is a wonderful way to get 1st graders interested in a range of lessons to expand their vocabulary. The art project that accompanies each one of the English lessons should either come at the end of the class or the beginning of the next class after a short review of the vocabulary learned.
Students may draw pictures on their own, but the teacher should take a walk around the room and invite them to talk to them about their work. Let’s say the teacher is using an art lesson to help with learning the names of different colors; they can ask students what color they are using?
Any teacher has probably already observed the great effect of kinesthetic learning in their classes, and active games can be an excellent method for getting beginners started.
Teachers should make sure to introduce the words they intend to use before introducing the game. Students always think they understand what the teacher says, especially if they follow the rest of the group. That’s why it’s essential to use games at the end of each one of the English lessons and to make certain that the teacher does not give them any clues with their body language as to what they should do.
Songs are a great tool for teaching new vocabulary, and the Internet is filled with awesome songs for children. The best time to sing a song is when the vocabulary has been taught to the students. Some songs are easier to learn which makes them ideal to be used the same day or the same week the vocabulary is introduced.
Teachers can have students create hand gestures or a dance to do with the song. Then they can illustrate the song as an art project.
When students are young, educative play is a great technique for teaching them without actually teaching them. Students can be invited to play together in different ways, either using board games or in a playroom, depending on how much space the classroom or the school has. Educative play is a way for teachers to join in the games while speaking English and asking questions that students answer.
It’s better if students answer in English, but they should not be forced to talk to each other in English. As the students improve, they may talk to each other in English by their own will, which proves that the lessons have been effective.
