Basic English writing structures; 3 most important structures
Learning a language means learning how to listen, speak, read and write in that language. Among these four skills, listening is the easiest one. Whereas writing is usually considered to be the most challenging skill to learn. This fact is true about all of the languages all around the world.
People are able to learn how to listen and speak in their mother tongue by themselves and need no academic studies. But it is not the same for reading and writing. Most people need academic studies, to learn how to read and write, even in their mother tongue.
The same procedure has always been applied to language learning. Language learning starts with working on language learners’ listening skills and ends up with working on their writing. So in second language learning, for example learning English, the basic English writing structures must be considered significantly.
In this article, we are going to focus on the basic English writing structures. But before that, some of the main features of English writing are explained briefly. This article is helpful for both English teachers and English learners.

Importance of basic English writing structures
One of the primary lessons learned by the scholar of language or linguistics is that learning a language, especially its writing structures, is much more than memorizing an endless vocabulary list. To find out about the basic English writing structures, we must also learn the principles of syntax.
An English language learner who is studying writing skills will usually be more curious about the structural principles than about the vocabulary intrinsically. That is because of the fact these principles are more useful in basic English writing structures, in comparison to vocabulary.
Basic English writing contains many different parts, most of which may even sound confusing. But the most important point to remember which can be always useful is that each sentence is based on a subject and the predicate.
The subject, which sentences start with, may be a word or a series of words that functions as a noun; the predicate is a minimum of a verb and can also include objects and modifiers of the verb. So the essential parts of a sentence in English writing are a noun and a verb, which can not be omitted; whereas the additional parts are able to be deleted from the sentence without any grammatical problems.
Effects of basic English writing structure on the meaning
Language learners are probably not as conscious of basic English writing structures as they are of sounds and words. That is because English writing structure is an abstract concept, whereas sounds and words are not. But the fact is that syntax (or basic English writing rules) is the central aspect of each sentence.
As an example, in basic English writing, an equivalent set of words can convey different meanings; just if they are arranged in different ways. Just the same thing occurs in the following sentences:
- They objected to the plans proposed by the king
- They proposed the plans objected to by the king
The meaning of first the sentence is sort of different from that of the second one, albeit the sole difference is that the position of the words is objected to and proposed. Although both sentences contain precisely the same words, the words are structurally associated with one another differently; it’s those differences in structure that account for the difference in meaning. This is exactly why basic English writing structures are so important.
Old- new info principle
In a school of linguistics in Prague, they have reached a fact: “when sentences are written in a way that follows basic English writing principles, we are able to part them into two parts first of which contains old information.” The second part of such sentences usually contains new information. It is obvious that this new information is more important to the listener.
This is one of the important principles of basic English writing, which is usually referred to as the “communicative principle”. This can be used more efficiently when being aware of syntax analysis. It can help differentiate between the parts of the sentence which contain old and new pieces of information.
A typical sentence following the Subject- Verb- Object rule of basic English writing, can be usually divided into two pieces, at least. The first piece of the sentence is its subject. This part usually codes the information which has been given to us. The second part is referred to as “the reminder”. This part is the most important part of the sentence because it provides new information for the first time.
Producing and interpreting sentence principles
There is one other point about basic English writing rules that is worth to be mentioned. The structures and principles of basic English writing that are used in a sentence, may sometimes be following some special reasons and purposes. This special reason can be a phonetic goal for the one who said the sentence. In addition, it can be a semantic goal for the ones who hear it.
Based on English writing structures, every designed sentence may be a conceptual and abstract summary of a series of overlapping snapshots of the common procedure of producing and interpreting the sentence.
An important point about basic English writing principles
The professors and students who study linguistics believed that basic English writing principles are generated from working attentively with sentences. They make small changes in a sentence and look at the linguistic differences that may (or may not) occur as a result. These attentive plays with sentences can be called “linguistic experiments”.
Every general linguistic rule and basic English writing principle that we have nowadays, has been once found out as a result of such little linguistic experiments. Below is an example of such a small linguistic experiment, which starts with is a little change in a sentence. In this example, this change makes it ungrammatical.
-She sees the white house. (Grammatically right)
-She sees the house white. (Grammatically wrong)
One possibility is that it relates to the words themselves; perhaps the word white and the word house should be used just in this special order to be correct based on basic English writing.
But if we were to elucidate during this way we might need separate explanations for a sizable amount of words, including the words within the sentences.
-I saw the new book. (Grammatically right)
-I saw the book new. (Grammatically wrong)
-He helped some homeless dogs. (Grammatically right)
-He helped some dogs homeless. (Grammatically wrong)
These sentences show us that whatever principle gives us the order of words based on basic English writing, it must be supported by the category of word, not just a selected group of the special word.
Taking a more attentive look at the examples for basic English writing which we mentioned here, we will find out that words white, new, and homeless all belong to a special category of words called adjectives; the words house, book, and dogs all belong to another category of words called nouns. We could formulate a rule, which based on English writing holds for the sentences mentioned.
Adjectives can never come immediately after nouns.
A principle of basic English writing results from an effort to elucidate the structures by which a sentence is put together. One of the most important uses of such principles of basic English writing is to make a prediction.
If this prediction seems to be wrong, then the principle needs to be revised and improved. The same thing happens for our newly made rule when we see the following sentence which is true:
– I painted the house white. (Grammatically right)
This is how every basic English writing structure is made; using little experiments.
Syntax; basic English writing structure
In English grammar, syntax is a concept which talks about that the arrangement of words, phrases, and clauses in different sentences. In short, talks about basic English writing structures.
The grammatical function or meaning of a sentence depends on this structural organization, which is also referred to as syntax or syntactic structure. A little change in basic English writing structures may result in a huge difference in the meaning.
Sentence structures in basic English writing
In traditional grammar, there are four basic sorts of sentence structures. These four types are simple sentences, compound sentences, complex sentences, and therefore the fourth type is referred to as compound-complex sentences. It is to the complex type of sentences in basic English writing structures.
The most common sort of sentence in basic English writing structures is simple sentences, which are made of a Subject, a Verb, and an Object in the end. These kinds of sentences are also called SVO sentences; which is an acronym for Subject Verb Object. Sentence structure is very important in basic English writing. Learners must understand English sentence structures to be able to write basic English writings.
Canonical sentence strategy in basic English writing
Most of the time, in basic English writing, when reading a sentence in English, we generally expect the primary noun to play the role of the subject. Then, the second part of the sentence must be the place for the verb, and eventually, the second noun must occur, which we expect to be the object.
This expectation (which isn’t always fulfilled) is understood in linguistics as the “canonical sentence strategy”, which is one of the most important parts of the basic English writing structures.
In brief, learning basic English writing is considered to be the hardest skill in English language learning. Learning basic English writing is not just about memorizing words and structures but it is one more important point to learn: syntax.
As mentioned, English learners must learn basic English writing to succeed in their English education. The basic English writing structures help the English learners to improve and progress their different English language skills at the same time. As a result, by learning the basic English writing structures, the English learners will achieve great English knowledge.
